Moving Forward

While we are still grappling with the troubling results of Tuesday’s presidential election, our work remains. I have just filed my statement of candidacy with the Federal Election Commission for the next election. The Texas part of that filing begins next November. It is more important now than ever to stand up for our values, …

Secretary Clinton Urges Us Forward

At this painful and shocking moment, Secretary Clinton powerfully urges us forward as part of a “democracy [that] demands our participation, not just every four years, but all the time. So let’s do all we can to keep advancing the causes and values we all hold dear.” Her powerful conclusion, quoted Galations 6:9 “Let us never grow weary in doing good, for in good season we shall reap.”

Austin Chronicle Endorsements

One consequence of the ruthless Texas redistricting initiated by now disgraced GOP Majority Leader Tom DeLay, and renewed by the current state Republican leadership, is that Austin has no congressional district anchored in the city. Instead, all five districts are anchored in other population centers, and the sole Democratic representative is Lloyd Doggett. That alone is a strong reason for a straight Democratic vote. In addition to Doggett, each 2016 Dem challenger would be an improvement on the current incumbents. They include RN Tawana Cadien (D10), educator William Matta (D17), longtime grassroots activist Tom Wakely (D21), and businesswoman Kathi Thomas (D25). Your Travis County ballot will reflect only one of these candidates – you can generate a personal sample ballot on the Travis County Clerk elections website.

Doggett deserves another term

Whether his district stretched to the border or was mangled to include both parts of Austin and parts of San Antonio — call it the fajita-shaped district — the aim was to either have a Republican win or get Latino voters to elect a Latino representative. Doggett has been a consistent voice for progressive ideas on pharmaceuticals, education, child and senior welfare, the safety net generally, and war and peace. Different in this election is Donald Trump, the GOP presidential nominee. There is nothing known about Trump now that wasn’t known before. […] while Doggett fully recognizes the human role in climate change, Narvaiz says “there is a discussion to be had.”

Doggett recognized by AARP as ‘Champion of the 50+’

AARP has announced U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett as a recipient of the 2016 “Champion of the 50+” legislative leadership award for his significant achievements during the 114th Congress that benefit the lives of the 50+ and our families. Representative Doggett received his award for preserving seniors’ access to healthcare with his sponsorship and support in the passage of the Notice of Observation, Treatment and Implication for Care Eligibility (NOTICE) Act.

Leadership needed to reduce child abuse tragedies

Despite efforts by state Sen. Carlos Uresti and others seeking improvements and so much good work locally, a federal court recently held the Texas foster care system unconstitutional, concluding the state has endangered children with unreasonably high caseloads, dangerous foster group homes, inadequate investigations into abuse and neglect and a lack of placement options. The Commission to Eliminate Child Abuse and Neglect Fatalities, established by legislation I authored, just released its final report, focusing on the need for prevention and more investment for vulnerable children, best local practices and some modest recommendations for improvement.

Thank you, for the encouragement and support, especially throughout these recent weeks. The low turnout does signal how much work remains to ensure Democratic victories in the General Election in November.

There are no unimportant elections and no unimportant races. From the courthouse to the statehouse to the Congress, I will be working for Democratic victories.
