Because of my strong support for public education, retirement security, affordable health care, and other of our shared priorities important to Texas families, Gov. Rick Perry and his Republican colleagues tried to achieve through backroom deals what they can’t achieve at the ballot box. They went Tom DeLay one better, dividing Travis County into five Congressional districts in an effort to deny our neighbors a voice in Congress at all. A federal court issued a new interim congressional map that unites much of Austin with western Hays County in the Congressional District 25. While disappointed to lose formal representation for communities with which I have worked so closely, like Lockhart, San Marcos, Kyle and Bastrop, I will continue to work with many friends there.
